All of our bulkhead fittings have female openings on both sides. This is where you will make your connections. The differences are how you attach your fittings or pipe to them. First we need to understand the terminology.
- Slip is a common term when referring to bulkheads. The proper PVC term is Socket (SOC), which is a fitting end type that allows pipes to slip into fittings to make a connection. To make the connection permanent and water-tight, PVC cement is required. When referring to Bulkhead fittings, the two terms are synonymous.
- Threaded is a type of connection on pipes and fittings. All of our Threaded bulkhead fittings have FEMALE pipe threads which requires you to use a MALE fitting. Examples of Male fittings include Male Adapters, PVC Nipples, Threaded Street Elbows, etc. Depending upon how you’re configuring your plumbing will determine which male fittings you will use. There is a lot of flexibility with threaded connections as they are not permanent. We think slip (glued) connections are the most reliable, but both will work.
When we discuss a Bulkhead Fitting’s connection we will ALWAYS refer to the FLANGE end FIRST. Therefore, the picture below is Thread x Slip (TxS).
Bulkhead options are:
- Slip x Slip Slip on both ends.
- Requires you to use Spigot (commonly referred to as SLIP) fittings or PVC pipe on each end of the bulkhead. PVC cement is required for a water-tight seal. You can glue any type of Spigot fitting, including a Spigot reducer if you require a smaller size on one end.
- Thread x Thread
- Female pipe threads on both ends.
- Thread x Slip
- Female pipe threads on the flange end and slip on the “nut” end.
- Slip x Thread
- Slip on the Flange end and threads on the “nut” end.
All of your fittings need to be attached to the inside of each side of the bulkhead.
The threads on the outside of the bulkheads will not fit any kind of PVC threads, These threads are for the retaining nut to thread on to and tighten the bulkhead when installing.

✔︎ Our bulkhead fittings are thicker than standard schedule 40 PVC fittings. This makes the bulkhead fitting heavy-duty and more durable than standard schedule 40 fittings. This also sets us apart from many competitors and allows our fittings to be used where lower quality fittings, especially those manufactured overseas, would crack or break. PERFECT FOR HYDROPONICS SYSTEMS – WE SHIP FAST AND FREE via PRIORITY MAIL or UPS.
✔︎ QUALITY GASKETS: All of our bulkhead fittings use high-quality, UV- stabilized, EPDM gaskets. The significance of this is that the gasket is treated to resist wear and weathering if exposed to the outside elements. Our bulkhead gaskets use a softer material giving the fitting a better grip on the mating surfaces for a reliable seal.
✔︎ TAPERED ENDS: All of our bulkhead fittings have tapered ends. This taper allows our bulkhead fittings to accommodate any brand of pipe used as they can be slightly different. Tapered ends are used on all Domestic Nominal PVC pipe fittings sizes. Most imported bulkhead fittings do NOT adhere to this standard.
✔︎ QUALITY CONTROL: All of our bulkheads are Made in America. The ability to oversee the manufacturing processes produces a higher quality product. Many other bulkhead distributors have their products manufactured overseas, making quality control – uncontrollable. USES A 3” HOLE FOR PROPER FIT.
✔︎ CUSTOMER SERVICE – Precision Marine has been serving the wholesale trade since 1997 and are always available should you have any questions. WE SHIP via USPS or UPS. SHIPS SAME DAY IF ORDERED BY 12PM CST. Questions? Send us a message
